Critical Exposure, a nonprofit organization founded in 2004, is
looking for 3 AmeriCorps*VISTA members beginning August 2011.
Critical Exposure teaches youth to use the power of documentary
photography and their own voices to become effective advocates for
school reform and social change. We work to fulfill our mission
through a unique three-pronged approach that blends art and advocacy:
1. Youth Empowerment – Provide students with training in documentary
photography, leadership, and advocacy; teach them how to document
issues that impact their lives; and help them to use their images and
voices to advocate for positive solutions to those issues.
2. Public Engagement – Inform and engage the public by using students’
photographs and writing to create traveling exhibits that can be shown
in galleries, libraries, coffee shops, and other public spaces to
increase awareness of the issues facing young people.
3. Policy Change – Partner with advocacy and community organizations
to implement creative strategies that use students’ photography and
voices to support school reform and social change.

VISTA members working with Critical Exposure will have the opportunity

Community Clean Energy Organizer - Hartford, CT

Clean Water Fund's Hartford, Connecticut office is hiring a full-time
community clean energy organizer to work for one year as part of a team
of organizers and volunteers seeking to create fundamental change in how
we use energy starting at the grassroots level.

With the state of the economy, concern over volatile energy prices,
continued federal inaction on global warming, and disasters like the
Gulf oil spill and nuclear plant failures in Japan, people are looking
for energy solutions. Connecticut has been at the forefront of states
leading the way on clean energy policies and this project provides an
opportunity to create a national model for how to engage entire
communities and their residents to make energy smart choices.

Clean Water Fund (CWF) is a national non-profit research and education
organization that promotes the public interest on issues relating to
energy, water, waste, toxics and natural resources. CWF's top goals
include building support for environmental health issues, and empowering
citizens to create grassroots power and make democracy work.

In Connecticut, Clean Water Fund has worked on energy issues beginning
in 1998 with the successful campaign to reduce pollution from the "Sooty
Six" power plants and followed by our work starting in 2003 to lead the
Connecticut Climate Coalition which supported ground-breaking global
warming and clean energy policies. We have also led citizen-based clean
energy campaigns to win municipal commitments to support clean energy.

Clean Water Fund's Connecticut office is located in the vibrant west end
of Hartford, within easy walking distance of international restaurants
and cafes, the Mark Twain House and Museum, and America's oldest
municipal rose garden in nearby Elizabeth Park. This project also has a
campaign headquarters in Wethersfield. Hartford is located between New
York City and Boston with convenient highway and bus access to both.

*The Project: Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge*
The Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge will engage residents of 14
municipalities to make clean energy choices as both individuals and as
members of their communities. Clean Water Fund will work to build local
coalitions, work with municipal leaders and train local volunteers to
get more than 10% of their households to reduce their energy use by at
least 20% and increase the local use of clean, renewable energy.

The project includes a comprehensive portfolio of tools including an
innovative online platform, an on-the-ground clean energy community
corps to spread the word about the program, financing help to assist
homeowners with energy efficiency measures and clean energy
installations, and rewards to communities for reaching their goals.

The actions are being undertaken by a consortium of 14 communities
throughout Connecticut, consisting of: Bethany, Cheshire, East Haddam,
East Hampton, Glastonbury, Lebanon, Mansfield, Portland, Ridgefield,
Weston, Westport, Wethersfield, Wilton and Windham. Together these towns
have nearly 100,000 households.

The project will be implemented by a partnership comprised of nine
public, private, academic and nonprofit organizations and state funds
including the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund, Connecticut Energy
Efficiency Fund, SmartPower, and the Student Conservation Association.

*Organizer Responsibilities:*
This community organizer position will manage community outreach in 4-6
diverse communities. This position requires both organizing and
management abilities as it will oversee several recent college graduates
and will encompass the recruitment, training and management of
volunteers in each community. This position reports to Clean Water
Fund's energy program director who has overall responsibility for this
project. We are looking for a commitment of at least one year.

The responsibilities of the community clean energy organizer will include:

* Developing and implementing outreach plans with project partners
* Carrying out grassroots energy outreach efforts
* Motivating individuals and groups to take action to reduce dirty
energy usage
* Making public presentations to groups and decision-makers
* Preparing materials and trainings for grassroots community groups
* Working collaboratively with local officials and the project's
partner groups
* Other responsibilities as needed

*Qualifications:*
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

* 1-3 years of experience organizing the public on environmental,
labor or health issues
* Experience overseeing staff and volunteers
* Demonstrated commitment to environmental health and clean energy
solutions
* Self-direction and ability to design a work plan, prioritize and
meet goals and overcome obstacles
* Strong oral and written communication skills, including experience
in preparing and delivering public presentations and communicating
directly with officials and members of the public
* Familiarity with clean energy and energy efficiency technologies

and others

Connecticut currently has approximately 100 municipal-level clean energy
task forces which collectively offer significant potential to move
Connecticut towards an efficient, clean energy future. Most of these
groups were created by a municipal government and include town staff or
officials as members. They often serve as de-facto energy managers
helping town governments on energy and conducting outreach on clean
energy and energy efficiency to fellow residents. However, as volunteers
with limited time and varying levels of knowledge, they often need
significant organizing and technical assistance to reach their full
potential. Working at the municipal level also isolates them from their
peers in other towns. Clean Water Fund is seeking a skilled energy
coordinator to systematically overcome these barriers.

This project has three primary objectives:

1. 1. Involve Local Voices in State Energy Deliberations
Clean Water Fund will work to empower communities to support
state-level clean energy policies and the implementation of such
policies. Clean Water Fund will work to involve municipal energy
leaders in state-level discussions such as expanding and improving
residential and municipal energy efficiency programs, and
increasing technical and financial support from state entities to
municipal governments on energy.
2. 2. Build Local Capacity through Training, Support and Regional
Collaboration
Clean Water Fund will foster connections and learning among clean
energy task forces by:
* Serving as a clearinghouse of materials and ideas to answer
questions, and make connections between towns facing similar
challenges
* Holding an ongoing training series of at least six sessions
per year, covering organizing and technical topics based on
local interest
* Creating best practices guides
3. 3. Provide Targeted One-on-One Group assistance
Clean Water Fund will select and provide significant direct
assistance to five newly established clean energy task forces and
five existing groups in need of significant organizing support per
year. Direct support includes: attending task force meetings,
facilitating goal-setting sessions, helping towns create outreach
plans and materials, providing direct outreach training, speaking
with town officials, and matching new groups with experienced
mentor towns.

*Qualifications:*

This energy coordinator position requires technical, advocacy,
organizing, and management abilities. This position reports to Clean
Water Fund's energy program director. We are looking for a commitment of
two years.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

* Passion for learning about energy, solving problems and working
with people
* 3-5 years of experience with grassroots organizing on
environmental, energy, labor or health issues
* Background in clean energy and energy efficiency technologies and

start immediately and/or this summer, to support our research
department. Research collection, organization, and analysis will
constitute a large part of the internship program. Our intern
